ROLE OF CREMATION WITHIN THE CATHOLIC FAITH
Cremation has long been permitted within the Catholic Church; however, there are important guidelines which must be followed. Cremated remains must always be treated with the same great respect given to the human body. Therefore, the Church is very clear on its requirements regarding cremated remains.
Do not scatter cremated remains
Do not divide cremated remains
Do not keep cremated remains at home
Cremation is selected for a variety of reasons, with costs often being a determining factor. The Catholic Cemetery Association recognizes this need and is offering the Cremated Remains Committal Service, a no-cost program that gives families the opportunity to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding the proper and reverent disposition of the cremated remain of their loved ones currently kept at private homes. The program offers a permanent placement of cremated remains, in a secure crypt, at no cost to the family. A Memorial Service is celebrated honoring those who are placed with family and friends invited to attend. The Cremated Remains Committal Service takes place every other year, on or near All Souls' Day.
This program is currently available at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe and at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque, with plans to expand to Gate of Heaven in the future. If you are currently in possession of cremated remains and would like information on an upcoming service, please contact Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe (505) 983-2322 or Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque (505) 243-0218.
